In November we’re celebrating National Hospice and Palliative Care Month. It’s a good time to remember that not only does the work matter, the people matter. Not just the terminally ill people in our care, but the interdisciplinary team members who provide that care.
Hospice professionals want the people they serve to know that while teams can’t give them quantity in the form of time, we do try to give our patients quality of life in whatever form it might take for them. A trip, an experience, an event they don’t want to miss. Privacy, faith, intimacy, connection, music, touch, movement. The small moments that add value to life. Patients and families tell us what quality means to them. We do our best to make it happen.
Hospice and palliative care professionals are simply people caring for other people. Jerry and I want to remind our end of life colleagues to take care of themselves, to provide for their own quality of life as they do their best to ensure the quality care of their communities.
You can’t pour from an empty cup. Take time to create some healthy Self Care for you and your hospice or palliative care teammates this November in honor of National Hospice and Palliative Care Month. Find what quality of life means to you and make it happen.
Your work with seriously ill patients matters. You are The Heart of Hospice.
With hope and heart,
Helen
